42 trucks to Russian Urals /13 Feb 2012/

Successful multimodal transport from Italy to the Russian Urals

With a total of 42 trucks, of which almost half was oversized up to 50 tons, Ahlers completed a multimodal transportation from Italy to the Russian Urals.
Project was obtained thanks to efficient cargo planning (we decreased amount of required trucks with 6) and confidence in the customs solution as provided by us.

With temperatures getting down to -36, resulting in frozen cranes and delayed trucks, we are proud to look back at a successful project that is performed in time and within budget.

Equipment was collected in Italy, trucked to the german port Luebeck and reloaded onto ferry to St Petersburg. After clearance in St Petersurg, for which our customs team at the Ahlers St Petersburg office did a big effort and a great job, the equipment was trucked another 2,400 km in harsh weather conditions.

Requirement to get the deal was a confirmation to custom clear all equipment under 0% import duties and 0% VAT, for which we found a creative solution to keep our risks low; we loaded the standard cargo into trailers that were shipped to St Petersburg on the same ferry as the oversized equipment. By clearing the equipment in the port of St Petersburg together with the trailers (and without drivers) we severely decreased risk of demurrage so we were able to quote more competitively.

As cargo readiness was delayed various times, and penalties to our client were severe in case of delay, planning of collection was difficult and changed several times. Final collection was partly done with permissions that were obtained within 5 calender days (incredible for Italy) and transit times have been considered as 'highly competitive' both by our client and the shipper.
