Ahlers has recently opened in New Delhi its 9th office in India. Total staff employed by Ahlers on the Indian subcontinent amounts to 90.
Founded in March 2004, Ahlers India has offices in Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Tirupur and Tuticorin. Ahlers' forwarding activities include the traditional agricultural products such as tea, coffee, tobacco but also leather, textile and machinery. 80% of the activities are export-related to destinations worldwide, import stands for 20%. Though also handling container transport, Ahlers is mainly focussing on project cargo. New Delhi is the capital of India and with 14 million inhabitants the third city in the country. It is the most important dry port and inland container depot and handles huge cargo volumes via gateway Mumbai, Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Pipava. "The opening of this office is the final step in the expansion of our Indian network and gives us full access to the entire market, including Ludhiana, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Agra and Jallandhar", explains Christian Leysen, Chairman of Ahlers. "We are now able to propose global logistic solutions to all inland destinations in Northern India", adds Shibu John, General Manager Ahlers India. "The wide Ahlers network enables us to handle door to door transport from India to Europe and to the CIS, China and Africa." Ahlers employs 600 people in 43 offices in Europe, the CIS, the Baltic and South East Asia as well as 400 sea going staff. 2005 turnover showed a 13% increase.
The major commodities are furniture, sports goods, automobile or machinery parts, pharmaceutical products, leather and rice. 70% of the goods routed through the gateway ports come from Northern India.
