The year 2002 saw an increasing rate of 34.60% in container traffic through the Port of Shanghai, which accounts for 1/4 of the total figure among the mainland ports of China and helps the Port of Shanghai to rank the 4th container port in the world.
Everyday, the Port handles about 25,000 TEU and it expects to break a record with more than 8.4 million TEU when the year 2002 rolls out. This will certainly lay a solid foundation for the Port to reach its ambition of an international shipping center in the short years to come.
Meanwhile, the port-stay time of container vessels in the Port is continuously reducing, e.g. a carrier above 2,000 TEU will be dispatched within 24 hours.
The breath-taking pace of the Port of Shanghai has also stimulated the container traffic development in the Yangtze River Delta and along the Yangtze River Valley, and vice versa.
According to the latest statistics, there are 103 daughter companies or offices of foreign shipping or shipping-related groups.
The target of the Port of Shanghai for the coming year 2003 is 9.5 - 10 million TEU.
