On May 15th 2001, 10 Caterpillar-compactors were shipped on Chipolbrok's mv Yong Xing out of the Port of Antwerp. These 10 compactors are the first of a considerable number of units to be shipped to Shanghai in the coming 5 years. Each unit has a weight of approximately 11000 kos and measures abt 527 x 245 x 300 cm. The first 10 compactors are expected to arrive in Shanghai by the end of June. The units were manufactured at Caterpillar's plant in Rantigny, France and transported by road to Antwerp.
Compactors are road machinery, used to increase the density of eg soil and asphalt. Caterpillar's intentions are to cover the whole Chinese market within the next 5 years, after which Caterpillar will start their own production line. Caterpillar is the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Caterpillar records half of its sales to overseas customers. The Caterpillar equipment production line consists of more than 300 machines.
